CARE TIPS
The key to a bright, healthy smile in adulthood is proper oral care. Adults can develop tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to serious problems. It is therefore important to continue the following practices in adulthood:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque, which is the main cause of tooth decay.
- Clean your teeth daily with dental floss or an interdental brush to remove plaque between your teeth and below the gum line.
- Limit your consumption of sugary snacks. The more often you eat or drink between main meals, the more often plaque acids are formed that attack your tooth enamel.
- Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and have your teeth professionally cleaned.
CROWNS
Severely damaged teeth can be restored aesthetically and functionally with a crown.
The dentist grinds the tooth and takes an impression. A plaster model of the tooth is created in the dental laboratory. First, a framework is created as the basis for the crown. This consists of a precious metal alloy or a specially resilient ceramic. Once the color has been selected, the dental technician veneers this framework with ceramic in appropriate layers. In areas that are not visible, the crown can also be made entirely from a precious metal alloy ("gold").
Once completed, the dentist cements the crown onto the prepared tooth stump.
Crowns can also be attached to implants.
BRIDGES
Bridges replace missing teeth. The gap is replaced by a crown (pontic) attached to the adjacent teeth.
A bridge consists of several connected crowns. To do this, the dentist must grind down the adjacent teeth. The technical procedure is the same as for a crown. Bridges with a metal framework are a proven treatment method. Nowadays, all-ceramic bridges are also possible.
An alternative to a bridge (especially if the adjacent teeth are healthy) is an implant with a crown.
IMPLANTOLOGY
Implants are tooth roots. They are used when one or more teeth are missing. Implants require a sufficiently large jawbone and are surgically inserted by a dentist or oral surgeon.
On the one hand, fixed crowns or bridges can be attached to implants, and on the other hand, implants can also stabilize a partial or total prosthesis (with a snap button or bar attached to the implant).
Functionally, an implant is like a tooth root.
PARTIAL MODEL PROSTHESIS
A model cast denture is a removable dental prosthesis that is attached to the teeth in the mouth with clasps.
The denture consists of a metal framework and plastic parts (saddle). The artificial teeth are attached to these plastic parts.
A model cast denture is a cost-effective and very effective type of denture.
FULL DENTURES
Full dentures achieve their hold through a precise fit on the jaw ridge and optimal expansion. This is why it is necessary to cover the front parts of the palate.
Their aesthetic effect in terms of shape and color is checked during a fitting.
Implants can be used to improve the hold and reduce the extension (e.g., on the palate).
INLAYS & ONLAYS
A tooth shows dark discoloration or palpable partial destruction (caries). The dentist grinds off the destroyed parts of the tooth. To close the tooth defect, an inlay (a flat filling) or onlay (multi-surface filling) with a long life expectancy can be made from a gold-platinum alloy or ceramic.
Inlays and onlays are proven tooth-preserving measures combined with high cosmetic value.
