Museo storico-artistico al Castelgrande
Museum in Bellinzona
The museum is located on two floors in the south wing of Castelgrande. The historical-archaeological section on the ground floor presents artifacts that testify to 6,500 years of human presence on the hill, from the first Neolithic village to the 20th century. The exhibition route allows visitors to immerse themselves in the heart of archaeological investigations and discover the daily activities of the hill's first inhabitants, as well as industries typical of the Stone Age such as agriculture and flint and rock crystal industries, and later, metalworking. The historical-artistic section presents a collection of 144 tempera drawings on paper (ca. 1470), originally adorning the wooden ceiling of a lavish 15th-century residence in the city center, demolished in 1970. Created by a Lombard artist, they depict Renaissance themes such as the world upside down, allegories of virtues, famous men, and Petrarchan lyricism.
