A distinction is made between numeric cash registers – which only print amounts and totals – and text-printing cash registers – which also print item texts and often a graphic company logo.

Some commercial cash registers have a connection for barcode scanners. Most models are equipped with a PC connection. This makes it very convenient to program the cash register using software on a PC. Special restaurant cash registers also offer table management with table split functions and hospitality receipt printing.
