Domaine Hôpital Pourtalès

THE VINEYARD

Terraced and almost entirely contiguous, the Hôpital Pourtalès vineyard stretches across the Entre-deux-Lacs region.

Benefiting from its sheltered location, which protects it from prevailing winds, and excellent sunshine, this corner of land has the ideal conditions for producing expressive wines, both white and red.

The Chasselas, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir grape varieties are rooted in purple and ochre rocky soil, rich in minerals and low in organic matter. The clay-limestone nature of this soil allows the plants to give their best, aided by the microclimate of Entre-deux-Lacs.

At Domaine Hôpital Pourtalès, the head oenologist and his team of winegrowers work to enhance these qualities through their expertise and care. They draw on the experience accumulated by previous generations while remaining open to new cultivation and winemaking techniques.

 

THE TROUB CELLARS

The estate's cellars in Cressier, known as the "caves de Troub," are a delight to visit.

Through the door bearing the Pourtalès family coat of arms, a staircase descends to venerable monastic cellars with ceilings formed of joists supported by wooden pillars. Time has stood still here to such an extent that you can almost see the shadows of the monks of Troub in their cassocks, who were the first to walk these underground spaces.

In the cellars of the "Maison de Troub," rebuilt in the mid-18th century, magnificent oak casks that have already held many vintages take pride of place. These impressive barrels can hold between 2,000 and 4,000 liters of wine. They are replaced every 80 to 100 years.

In 2013, the cellar was enlarged and equipped with a barrel cellar where the best vintages of Domaine Hôpital Pourtalès are aged.
