Geneva Judo Club
History
1947
Dr. MARTI founds the Geneva Judo Club.
1948
Jean Georges VALLÉE, then a member of the French national team, is appointed head of the school.
Gradually, judo gained recognition and the influence of the dojo spread beyond Geneva: Jean Georges VALLÉE's former students played a leading role in founding dojos in Lausanne, Morges, Fribourg, Thonon les Bains, and Bellegarde.
1954
After winning over adults, judo began to attract children and teenagers.
1958
With the opening of the new hall at 4 Avenue Jules Crosnier (a modern facility for the time, with changing rooms, showers, and heating), the club intensified its activities and won numerous individual and team competitions.
1963
Under the presidency of Mr. René GAY, also president of the Swiss Judo Association, the Geneva Judo Club organized the European Championships, which were held in Switzerland for the first time. The publicity surrounding this event gave a boost to Swiss judo as a whole and attracted the attention of sports leaders.
1969
Rudolf EBERHARD paved the way for stays in Japanese schools, spending a year at the famous TENRI University, followed by some of our students: Jean Michel PEYVEL, Alfred UELTSCHI, Alexandre MOSER, Florian EGLIN, Rodolphe PEYVEL, Florin ROULET, David FERNANDEZ, and Thierry RAPPARD.
1990
A new chapter begins. Jean Georges VALLÉE retires and hands over the management of the school to Jean-Michel PEYVEL.
1997
The club celebrates its 50th anniversary by organizing a gala at the Bâtiments des Forces Motrices in Geneva. On this occasion, around fifteen of our students fly to Japan.
1999
The dojo on Avenue Crosnier proves to be too small. The 100 square meters of tatami mats are no longer sufficient to accommodate the many children, teenagers, and adults who attend the dojo. In April 1999, we move to 24 Rue Goetz Monin, into a bright, airy 350-square-meter space with suitable facilities.
2007
The Geneva Judo Club has been in existence for 60 years.
2010
After 50 years of practicing martial arts, Jean-Michel Peyvel retired. He handed over the management of the school to his son Rodolphe, who had been teaching since 1999 and had been assisting him since 2008.
Successive teachers
Jean Georges VALLEE from 1948 to 1990
Jean Michel PEYVEL from 1990 to 2010
Rodolphe PEYVEL since 2010. Judo instructor since 1999 First degree state certificate in judo.
Disciplines practiced
Judo:
Judo techniques aim to use the partner's strength to unbalance them, throw them, immobilize them, or force them to give up using joint locks or chokeholds. Ancient jujitsu techniques can be found in katas, ritualized technical exercises.
Appropriate teaching from an early age, with adapted instruction, allows for the harmonious development of children. Teenagers and adults continue to practice enthusiastically, finding it a multifaceted activity: leisure, competition, or personal development.
Aikido: Originating from one of the oldest schools of jujitsu, aikido is the result of Master UESHIBA's lifelong research.
The aikido practiced in our school does not involve competition. It allows practitioners to develop a keen sensitivity to their partner's strength in order to deflect, control, and turn it against them. As they progress, practitioners will gradually learn to express their internal strength rather than relying on physical force.
Tai chi chuan: Originating in China, tai chi chuan is a surprising form of exercise known as "long life" and also a system of self-defense.
Tai chi chuan encourages practitioners to refocus and develop their internal energy.
