Judicial officers act as ministerial officers in the same way as notaries and operate independently throughout the canton of Geneva. With a numerus clausus of nine, they are appointed by the State Council and sworn in when they take office. The profession is liberal and governed by the law and regulations on bailiffs. The activities of bailiffs include the following:
