Geology
The municipal area of Gurzelen was largely shaped by glacial masses up to 800 meters thick during the Ice Age. They pressed the subsoil into hard layers of sandstone and conglomerate, ground down hills and pushed out depressions, which were later filled with moors.
When the glaciers retreated, the stones they had carried over long distances remained behind, such as the "Fuchsenstein" in Steinhölzli, which originated in the Grimsel area, and the boulder in the forest near Kühweid, which came from the Kleine Scheidegg region.
