Keeping koi is a wonderful hobby that allows you to enjoy many hours of leisure, away from stress and hecticness—at least, that's how it should be!

My enthusiasm for fish began when I was at school and my grandmother gave me a goldfish, which was still in a very large preserving jar.

Later, I got my first aquarium. I was hooked on aquatics and bought another aquarium with my first apprentice's wage. Another 79 were to follow. At that time, I bred about 30 varieties of aquarium fish and various plants, and was a regular visitor to fish and plant exchanges in Switzerland. In 1989, I sold the entire setup because I was devoting myself to my studies. At the end of my studies, I suddenly had endless time on my hands, and my search for more koi abroad led me to Japan. I was able to establish contact with my agent at the time at a large international trade fair. I recorded my knowledge at the time in a book entitled "Ihr Hobby Japanische Farbkarpfen" (Your Hobby: Japanese Colored Carp), published by Dähne Verlag.

Together with my father, we built a pond so that the fish could live in the open air – with many mistakes, of course. I then bought my first koi in a pet shop. My interest in this species deepened through specialist literature. In search of the most beautiful specimens from Japan for our pond, I combed through all the pet shops.

Finally, I found them: Japanese koi in beautiful colors. That was over 43 years ago.

I have been flying to Japan for more than 27 years now and I am still koi-kichi (crazy)!
