Whereas in the past the focus was on cleaning chimneys, stoves, tiled stoves, and stove pipes, the scope of work performed by chimney sweeps and chimney sweepers today is much broader.

In residential buildings, the primary tasks of chimney sweeps include the periodic cleaning and maintenance of combustion and smoke extraction systems (central heating, fireplaces, Swedish stoves, etc.). Industry and commerce also require the services of chimney sweeps. Schools, hospitals, homes, multi-purpose halls, etc. have a great need for heat and hot water, which is met by large heating systems, e.g., modern wood chip heating systems.

Finally, chimney sweeps offer combustion technology advice for new buildings and, in certain cantons, act as a supervisory body to ensure that fire and fire safety regulations are complied with.
