November 1996 saw the birth of the amaZOOnas pet shop. The ideal premises were found in Lucerne-Littau: 350 m² of retail space and 350 m² of outdoor space surrounded by greenery. This green space was a decisive factor in the choice of location for the shop by owners Nicole von Däniken and Roberto Topatigh. This is because outdoor housing, adapted to the needs of our animals, is simply more species-appropriate than indoor housing alone. "Our outdoor facilities consist of a 20 m3 aviary with large yellow-headed amazons, a 150 m2 outdoor enclosure for dwarf goats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, as well as five ponds." These are home to koi and goldfish as well as native fish species such as tench, rudd, moderlieschen, minnow, bitterling, pond mussels and many more. From spring to fall, amaZOOnas offers the largest selection of native pond and biotope fish in the region. An exotic palm garden gives the outdoor facilities a Mediterranean flair during the warm season.

amaZOOnas breaks with existing pet shop norms by designing its facilities to be as spacious and natural as possible. In the aquatics department, there are no tanks with a capacity of less than 96 liters, while the larger tanks hold between 300 and 1800 liters. The turtle pond covers 6 m², while the tropical rainforest terrarium for water dragons has a floor space of 6 m² and is 2.5 m high. Large bearded dragons inhabit a terrarium with a floor space of 4 m². We keep our exotic birds in 2.6 m high aviaries with a floor space of 2 m². Our koi swim in a 5000-liter pond with a waterfall, which is lined with lush vegetation.

An important aspect of species-appropriate animal husbandry is to incorporate nature. Plants, rock structures, climbing branches, waterfalls, caves, sufficient hiding places, and, of course, plenty of space can be used to create natural environments in which our animals feel comfortable. This also includes a healthy, varied diet with regular vitamin supplements and fresh food. The importance of UVA and UVB radiation is well known in terrarium keeping and must be available to all reptiles unfiltered and adapted to the needs of the respective species.

amaZOOnas constantly strives to expand its standard range and regularly offers rare items to interested and knowledgeable pet owners. This has resulted in a range of freshwater, brackish water, and saltwater fish, corals, amphibians, lizards, snakes, turtles, tarantulas, scorpions, display insects, rodents, and birds that is unique in Central Switzerland. amaZOOnas is a pet store that clearly distances itself from supermarkets and discounters. It is an independent private company that focuses on competent, expert advice and guarantees the quality of its products. In addition to all this, amaZOOnas also wants to convey a nature experience. Outdoor enclosures, large aviaries, naturalistic display aquariums and terrariums, ponds, palm trees, and banana trees inspire tropical fantasies. "Don't you have to pay an entrance fee?" asked one customer, giving us the highest praise.
