So you can see the forest for the trees
Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. That's why we've put together a few facts about wood to give you a better understanding of this extraordinary natural resource.
The forest
Natural forests are called primeval forests or primary forests. However, all the wood we process here comes from a forest – a managed forest. The forest is a complex ecosystem and the most important influencer of the global climate after the oceans. Not only does it produce oxygen, but its storage capacity also ensures the long-term binding of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The tropical rainforests around the equator and the boreal forests – i.e., those associated with the northern climate of Europe, Asia, and America – form the most extensive contiguous forest areas on Earth.
Wood
Wood is defined botanically as follows: Wood is the secondary xylem—i.e., the conductive tissue for water and inorganic salts—produced by the cambium of the seed plant. The cambium, in turn, is the formative tissue located between the bark and the wood. Another characteristic of wood is the storage of lignin in the cell wall. Wood is an incredibly versatile and, above all, renewable raw material, making it one of the most important plant products of all.
