Welcome to FOJ
Helping young people and supporting families
The Official Youth Foundation (FOJ) aims to promote the psychosocial development of children, adolescents, and young people in difficulty, in collaboration with parents and partner institutions.
Bound by a service contract with the State of Geneva, the FOJ is committed to defending the interests and safety of children. Serving families in the canton, it works in four main areas: child welfare, emergency care, family support, and preparation for independence.

Child welfare
With child protection as its primary mission, FOJ offers children, adolescents, and young adults a safe and harmonious environment, while promoting their physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and relational development.
The semi-communal living experience offered by FOJ's educational homes significantly helps children and adolescents find their place in their families and in society, as well as develop their civic spirit and sense of responsibility.
With the child's consent and active participation, educators systematically put in place an individualized, personalized, and realistic support plan. In their daily work, the educational team at the homes emphasizes the rights and duties of young people, as well as their responsibilities and their ability to build a plan for their future.
Within the legal framework established by federal and cantonal law and by current judicial decisions, families and partners are invited to participate together in this plan.
Emergency accommodation
Emergency shelters are safe and protective places for children and adolescents in crisis situations that require temporary separation from their natural environment, as decided by the Child Protection Service or a judicial authority. This is particularly the case for victims of domestic and family violence and alleged perpetrators.
What do we mean by "crisis"? Every life is marked by periods that can lead to crises. These are characterized by states of disruption, accompanied by anxiety, sometimes violence, but always suffering, whether predictable or not.
The repetition and intensification of these periods can lead to intervention or even emergency shelter. The latter is often very useful, as a period of crisis is a particularly favorable time to begin a process of change.
The mission of FOJ emergency shelters is to support young people and their families in growing enough to enable them to return home as soon as possible. Throughout the support period, the educational teams ensure that the child's basic needs are met, while promoting ties with their family and continuing their education.
If the process requires more time, educators may consider placing the child in another medium- or long-term care facility.
Support for families
Both in residential care homes and in the context of home-based work, support for families is a cornerstone of the FOJ's educational work. In order to rebuild a situation in which everyone can play their part and assume their responsibilities, parent-child bonds, relationships, and contact are encouraged as much as possible.
Support for families should be seen as a partnership between parents and professionals. The educational team informs, consults, and solicits families at every stage of the process, in a spirit of respect and non-judgment. Parents are considered to be the driving force behind the joint project. They are by no means passive beneficiaries of FOJ services, but rather key players in building a better future for their families.
Preparing for independence
One of the FOJ's missions isto help young people reach adulthood and become independent. To this end, the Foundation provides young people with several shared apartments and studio apartments in residences.
These residences welcome non-university students, apprentices, and young workers with low incomes who are pursuing their professional careers in a place conducive to their plans. They benefit from individualized support from the responsible educator, who emphasizes self-discipline and responsibility on a daily basis, both for oneself and towards others.
Experiencing communal living in an atmosphere of civility, respect, and tolerance is a key benefit of shared housing, in addition to learning how to manage daily life and oneself. Young people learn this on a daily basis, particularly when using the common areas.
