What is CBD?
CBD and THC have virtually the same chemical composition Image: Wikipedia
Students in baggy pants, businessmen in suits, and 70-year-old grandmothers—everyone wants to try "legal weed." Specialty retailers are posting record sales, consumers are delighted, and the authorities are overwhelmed. What exactly is CBD?
CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, a chemical active ingredient from the cannabinoid class. CBD and THC are very similar in structure and have the same chemical formula. Their appearance and smell are also almost indistinguishable.

However, CBD has slight differences in its molecular structure and is therefore not psychotropic and does not affect the central nervous system.
Cannabis that is legally available on the market usually has a CBD content of 10 to 20 percent and a residual THC content of 0.3 to 0.7 percent.
7 good reasons why cannabis should be legalized
Does CBD get you high?
Anyone who smokes CBD to get high will be disappointed. Image: NAVESH CHITRAKAR/REUTERS
CBD does not get you high – at least not in the conventional sense. CBD is considered a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. This means that it does not affect the central nervous system and does not influence comprehension or perception – in other words, it does not cause intoxication.
Consuming CBD has a calming effect and helps against cramps, inflammation, anxiety, and nausea. The residual THC content in legal cannabis is not enough to cause intoxication.
If CBD doesn't get you high, why smoke it?
CBD is described by many as a miracle cure, but its effects have not yet been proven. Image: Brennan Linsley/AP/KEYSTONE
The medical effects of CBD are not yet proven. Nevertheless, scientists and doctors suspect that legal cannabis could be used as a medicine for many diseases.
Among other things, possible therapeutic effects against epilepsy, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, nausea, psychosis, depression, and even cancer are being discussed .
In Switzerland, however, specific healing promises may not be made for legal reasons – CBD is only sold as a tobacco substitute or raw material. Sellers and producers therefore distance themselves from the medical effects and ask consumers to form their own opinions.
According to the Swiss Medical Association, however, CBD can be prescribed by doctors for moderate to severe spasticity in multiple sclerosis (MS). To do so, doctors must demonstrate that the disease severely impairs the patient's quality of life and that other therapies have been unsuccessful.

Is CBD dangerous?
So far, there are no signs that CBD can be dangerous. Nevertheless, a warning label is attached to tobacco substitutes. Image: KEYSTONE
There is still too little information about potential dangers, says Markus Meury of Addiction Switzerland. "We are seeing a boom in CBD weed, but we can still say very little about the dangers. Basically, however, it can be said that smoking is always unhealthy due to the carcinogenic combustion particles."
Who consumes CBD – experienced hash smokers or inexperienced drug novices? "Even though CBD does not cause intoxication, it could be a way for cannabis addicts to quit. However, it could just as easily be a gateway to marijuana," says Meury.

Is CBD really legal?
CBD is legal. However, what CBD is sold as is another question. Image: STRINGER/REUTERS
Since CBD is a non-intoxicating active ingredient, it is not subject to the Narcotics Act and is legally available. Since 2011, there has also been a provision stating that cannabis with a THC content of less than one percent is not subject to narcotics law and is therefore also legal.
There are only four legal CBD tobacco substitutes in Switzerland. The rest of the CBD products are sold as raw materials and are actually in a legal gray area. CBD raw materials are theoretically not suitable for consumption, but many people smoke them anyway. Unlike tobacco substitutes, however, CBD raw materials are exempt from tobacco tax.
This is what Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, has to say on the matter:
"Raw materials containing CBD are often found on the market without a specified purpose. They cannot be clearly classified, as they can be used to manufacture different products with different purposes, which in turn are subject to different legislation." – As of February 27, 2017
