Mold

What is mold?

Mold is the colloquial term for mold fungi. These are a natural part of our living environment and are normally harmless. However, if the concentration of mold fungi exceeds a certain level, it can cause serious health problems for humans. The effects of indoor mold on human health are a much-discussed but completely underestimated topic in the public sphere. Clear links between mold exposure and respiratory diseases or allergies have been confirmed in a large number of studies.

How does mold develop?

Every day, several liters of water are converted into steam in living spaces through washing, bathing, cooking, etc. In old, poorly insulated buildings, the water vapor can escape through cracks. With better insulation—for example, thanks to new thermal insulation windows—the exchange with the outside air is reduced. The vapor often condenses on the wall if it is at a lower temperature than the air in the room. This happens mainly at night when the temperature in the room and on the exterior walls drops: the colder room air can absorb less moisture. The water vapor condenses on the walls. These are ideal conditions for mold. In this age of energy conservation with tightly sealed windows and higher thermal insulation, indoor environments are increasingly becoming hazardous to health. In addition to structural defects, incorrect usage is often one of the causes. Signs of moisture problems include constantly fogged-up window panes, damp spots, peeling wallpaper, and a musty smell. Mold thrives best at a relative humidity of approx. 70% and a temperature above 20°C. However, the conditions for development and the damaging potential of mold species vary greatly. Mold can grow on a variety of materials and in a wide range of temperatures. As a general rule, however, windows and walls can quickly become damp when relative humidity is high, outside temperatures are low, and thermal insulation is poor.

Consequences of mold:

As mold increases indoors, so does the health risk.

The most common symptoms are:

- Irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.

- Respiratory tract irritation can lead to bronchitis (coughing) and asthma over time.

- Allergies

- Predisposition to colds

- In sick people, the immune system can be further weakened.

Even an area of more than 0.5 m2 is a risk factor and must be professionally remediated.
