The pleasure of cooking
A great passion for cooking and delicate flavors
Our chef Stefano Burkhalter, current manager and head chef at Costa Azzurra, discovered his passion for cooking at a very early age. In 1983, he began his apprenticeship as a chef at Lüscherz, near Lake Biel, completing it in 1986, the year he arrived in Ticino. Until 1990, he worked at the Albergo della Posta in Locarno-Monti while also serving in the military as a head chef.
That same year, he finally arrived at the Costa Azzurra. He started as a cook and became head chef two years later. On March 1, 2017, when the Schwyn family, owners of the restaurant, decided to enjoy their retirement, Stefano took over as manager and head chef. As service manager and right-hand man, he benefits from the valuable work of the former owners' daughter, Manuela Schwyn. In 2018, he joined the Gilde dei ristoranti (Restaurant Guild).
Stefano loves to travel and explore the culinary culture of the places he visits. Wherever he goes, he ends up bringing something back with him to use in the kitchen: a new recipe or a new ingredient to use in his dishes to create new, tasty flavor combinations.
The history of the Costa Azzurra Restaurant
The history of the Costa Azzurra Restaurant began in the 1950s and was acquired by the Schwyn family in 1988. After a complete renovation, carried out with great passion and enthusiasm, the reopening was celebrated in June 1989.
Over time, thanks to continuous investments in improvements, the restaurant has become a little gem, combining traditional furnishings with more modern elements. A truly successful mix that makes the atmosphere warm and welcoming.
Since March 2017, the Costa Azzurra restaurant has been excellently managed by our chef Stefan Burkhalter.
In addition to the indoor dining area, the restaurant also has a large and charming outdoor area for the warmer months, surrounded by greenery and furnished with granite tables, where you can enjoy unique moments outdoors while listening to the relaxing sound of the Maggia River flowing nearby. It is the ideal setting to feel like you are in the valley, even though you are close to the city.
