Sandblasting using air blasting, cryogenic cleaning using dry ice (-78°)
Air blasting
Works on the same principles as sandblasting, with the following differences:
- The type of abrasive used is adapted to the surface being treated. Different types of abrasives are used depending on whether the surface is wood, metal, or stone, for example.
- The size of the abrasive (also known as grain) must be adapted to the surface to be treated. On old wooden furniture, 80-grit abrasive should not be used, as it may damage the wood and disfigure the furniture.
- The amount of abrasive to be propelled is adjusted according to the thickness and hardness of the surface to be stripped or cleaned.
- The air flow (the pressure at which the abrasive is propelled) is adjusted according to the substrate. On an air blasting machine, the pressure ranges from 0.5 to 8 bars.
All this is done with the sole aim of not damaging (denaturing) the treated surface and satisfying the customer's expectations.
In addition, all the abrasives used, whether garnet, walnut shells, sodium bicarbonate, calcium or glass granules, are:
- NATURAL,
- ECOLOGICAL,
- HEALTH-SAFE.
Choosing the right abrasive is essential to achieving the final result desired by the customer.
Cryogenic cleaning
In cryogenic cleaning, the solid abrasive used in air blasting is replaced by small pellets of "dry ice," also known as "carbon dioxide ice."
The principle remains the same in that the dry ice (-79°) is propelled by compressed air onto the surface to be cleaned. The pressure and flow rate of the ice are adapted to the surface, depending on its consistency, hardness, degree of soiling, and fragility.
Under the effect of compressed air, the dry ice pellets (which can reach 3 mm in diameter) are accelerated to a speed of 150 m/s. At a temperature of -79°C, the pellets freeze the impurities on impact and crack them. Thanks to their high speed, the dry ice pellets can then easily remove the dirt. This is a particularly effective method that removes almost all impurities while being extremely gentle on the materials.
