Information:
FREQUENT EAR INFECTIONS?
To prevent ear canal infections caused by frequent
contact with water, e.g., for swimmers and divers,
diving ear drops are a good prophylactic measure. They create an
acidic environment in the ear canal that bacteria and fungi cannot
and help the ear canal to dry more quickly.
This is because the temperature in the ear canal is around 37°C; together
with moisture, this is an ideal breeding ground for germs.
DO YOU SNORE?
You are not alone with this problem!
One in four adults (men and women) snore regularly. With increasing age
, the frequency also increases.
How snoring sounds are produced:
During sleep, the muscles in the throat relax
throat relax, which can block the airways. When
breathing, the air now tries to flow past the obstruction.
This creates vibrations that we hear as snoring.
The soft palate and the uvula play a decisive role in this process.
uvula play a decisive role in this process. Obstructed
nasal breathing, obesity, alcohol, sleeping pills, or
similar factors.
Banal or dangerous snoring?
TRIVIAL snoring mainly disturbs your partner
and is otherwise not harmful to health.
DANGEROUS snoring, which is accompanied by prolonged
breathing pauses (called obstructive
sleep apnea syndrome), leads to long-term complications
such as high blood pressure and heart disease and must be
further investigated in a sleep laboratory and then treated.
What can you do yourself?
Maintain your ideal weight and avoid alcohol in the evening
. Pay attention to your sleeping position:
Sleep with your head elevated and avoid
sleeping on your back.
If these measures are not enough, talk to your
doctor. An examination by an ear, nose, and throat specialist will show
which measures are appropriate and whether further
examinations are indicated.
TREATMENT OPTIONS:
Depending on the cause of snoring, different
measures can be considered, such as a dental splint to
slightly advance the lower jaw, removal of the
tonsils, shrinking the nasal turbinates
or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
Sometimes a combination of the above
measures is advisable.
Snoring splint: This is a simple, inexpensive, and effective
measure for reducing or even eliminating
snoring.
Such a splint is customized to fit each individual. We
will be happy to advise you.
