Blood donation appointments Blood Donation Northwestern Switzerland is a non-profit foundation and a member of the Swiss Red Cross Blood Donation Service. On behalf of the federal government, we are responsible for supplying healthcare facilities with blood products. For this purpose, we operate a blood donation center in downtown Basel as well as a collection site at the Cantonal Hospital in Liestal. In addition, we regularly conduct mobile blood donation drives in local communities. We produce the blood products at our center and run an immunohematology laboratory accredited by SAS. The donated blood is used to treat people who have suffered severe blood loss due to accidents or surgeries. It is also essential in the treatment of cancer, leukemia, and other illnesses. In our region, about 50% of the required blood units are missing. To cover the full demand, we must purchase additional blood products from other parts of Switzerland.
