Bookbinder is the name given to the profession that gives the book its final form and produces the cover. This involves the final stage of book production after editing, typesetting, layout, and printing have been completed, i.e., the production and binding of the outer cover surrounding the book block, including all steps from arranging and assembling the pages to artistic design.

Bookbinders can also modify existing bindings, for example to repair a volume or, historically, especially in the Baroque period, to standardize the appearance of a library.
