Brockenbude Glubos – the independent, non-profit secondhand store in Basel
Glubos – the independent, non-profit secondhand store
We collect everything usable free of charge, clear it away and dispose of it. Our proceeds go to the Frauen-Oase Basel (Basel Women's Oasis), we work and make decisions collectively on an equal footing and have been known for our shop window for over 40 years.
Clearance and disposal
We clear entire apartments and houses. We transport everything we can use for the store free of charge. You only pay for the items we have to dispose of. We are happy to visit you without obligation. Viewing and cost estimates are free of charge – just give us a call.
Waste from clearances is sorted and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Care is taken to separate glass, ceramics, metal, wood, electronic devices, and toxic substances. Old clothes and fabrics are collected for mountain relief and passed on to the Telltex company: https://www.glubos.ch/raeumen
Store assortment & sales
At Glubos, you will find almost everything you need for everyday life—from wardrobes to coffee spoons: Heavy furniture such as kitchen buffets, beds, and pianos are located on the ground floor. On the mezzanine floor, you will find tables, chairs, lamps, and carpets. On the upper floor, there are books and clothing, kitchenware and consumer electronics, paintings, antiques, and curiosities. Here, you can browse to your heart's content. We are constantly updating our range and presenting it in an appealing way. https://www.glubos.ch/laden/#laden
Pick-up service & deliveries
Do you have furniture or items that you no longer need? We welcome your donations and will pick up anything that can be used in the store free of charge. You get rid of unwanted items and enable us to do several good deeds at once:
By offering useful, beautiful, and unusual items for sale, things are reused and not thrown away unnecessarily. This is environmentally sustainable, provides other people with affordable everyday items, and creates meaningful jobs. And with our net profits, we support the Frauen-Oase, an important drop-in and counseling center for women in Kleinbasel.
We are happy to deliver furniture you have purchased from us to your home. Transport costs are calculated based on time spent. https://www.glubos.ch/abholen
Who we are
The Glubos secondhand store is run by the non-profit association Kreislauf. We do not belong to any organization and are non-denominational. We use our net profits to support the Frauen-Oase Basel, an important drop-in and counseling center for women in Kleinbasel, as well as other social institutions and cultural events whenever possible.
We have been running our second-hand shop on a self-managed basis for a long time, with a team of employees who share all the work equally and make business decisions together. The collective currently consists of four women and six men. Glubos is one of the oldest second-hand shops in Basel and a hub for Basel's alternative cultural scene. https://www.glubos.ch/ueber-uns
Loans & shop window
From old to new, from everyday to bizarre: Glubos offers a wide range of design objects. For a fee, we lend out furniture and objects for public cultural or social events and art projects.
Our shop window displays more than just the items you can buy from us. We are best known for our installation shop windows. For this reason alone, it is worth making a detour to Rappoltshof. You can find our current shop window display and a selection from previous years here: https://www.glubos.ch/laden/#schaufenster
History
Brockenbude Glubos was founded in 1972. In reference to the Globus department store, where disposable furniture was first offered at that time, the name stands for the idea of recycling by reversing it.
First located in Kleinhüningen, then in Riehen, the Brockenstube was initially affiliated with the umbrella organization "SJWG/Selbsthilfe Jugendlicher in Wohngemeinschaften" (Self-Help for Young People in Shared Accommodation) and the therapeutic shared accommodation facility Gatternweg, offering young people from a reformatory and former drug addicts an opportunity to enter the world of work. The profits generated went to the shared accommodation facility.
In the early 1980s, the second-hand shop and the residential community were separated institutionally, as the sales staff, who had little training in social pedagogy, were overwhelmed by the task of providing support. A group of employees decided to continue the business independently as a workers' collective and to donate the proceeds to the residential community. In 1982, an association was founded for this purpose, which took over the business, now located in Kleinbasel on Hammerstrasse. In the winter of 1984/85, Glubos moved to its current location at Rappoltshof 12. Since the second-hand shop became independent, the work collective has consisted of eight to ten members, with an equal number of women and men where possible. Together with the association's board, they determine the management and carry out all the necessary work as a team.
When the therapeutic facility at Gatternweg was closed in 1996, Glubos decided to support the Frauen-Oase. In the first year, a symbolic amount and donations in kind were made. Today, the Glubos second-hand shop is one of the most important partners and patrons of the Frauen-Oase, alongside the city of Basel. Glubos also supports other social institutions and cultural events wherever possible.
In 2007, the collective celebrated its 35th anniversary with a street party, and in 2012, Glubos hosted a theater project with Matto Kämpf to mark its 40th anniversary.
Commitment
It is not only the reuse of everyday objects, the creation of meaningful jobs, and equal cooperation within the team that are important to us. Social and cultural commitment is also close to our hearts:
We use our net profits to support Frauen-Oase Basel, an important drop-in and counseling center for women in Kleinbasel. Where possible, we also make financial or material donations to other social institutions – for more information, visit: https://www.glubos.ch/ueber-uns
