Three quarters of a century of company history

The history of our traditional painting business is also a small piece of Basel's history. It began in 1931, when Paul Barbey—grandfather and great-grandfather of the current owners—opened a painting studio on Maiengasse and quickly built up a considerable customer base thanks to his solid work. Soon, apprentices were being trained.

The "vehicle fleet" was modest: bicycles were used to get to the various job sites, and tools and materials were transported on handcarts.
 

 

Word of Paul Barbey's painting business spread throughout Basel, and so the company weathered the crisis and war years well. The studio on Maiengasse became too small, and in 1947 the company moved into its own premises at Allschwilerstrasse 67, where the company headquarters are still located today.

The company still did not have a motorized vehicle, but the handcart now bore the company name "P. Barbey + Sohn" in beautiful tin foil lettering.

 

To the delight of his grandfather and father, Nicolas Barbey became the third generation to begin an apprenticeship as a painter in the family business in 1956. He – now the senior owner – became the youngest master painter in Switzerland in 1964. The company was then renamed J. Barbey + Sohn.

Meanwhile, the family business continued to develop and its customer base grew. New materials and modern technology were introduced. The fourth generation grew up and joined the company. In 1996, the painting business, widely known for its solid work, was converted into a public limited company. A new company name reflects the bond between generations: Barbey Söhne AG.
