The Liestal Guide Dog School (VBM) is an institution recognized by the Federal Social Insurance Office, dedicated since 1986 to training guide dogs for the blind and 'confidence dogs' (assistance dogs for people with autism). A special feature of the school is the variety of breeds; not only Labradors but also Poodles and other breeds are trained to meet individual needs. The school does not have its own breeding program and purchases puppies that grow up in foster families. Training is decentralized and integrative, with dogs living in the instructors' families. The 'Weideli' center in Liestal serves as a seminar and meeting place.
