140 years of history
The Veuthey company was founded in 1882 in Martigny by Joseph Veuthey as a sole proprietorship. At the time, the hardware business was the core activity, with wine trading complementing it.
In 1914, Alfred Veuthey, Joseph's son, expanded his father's business and, in 1945, brought his sons Jean and Pierre into the limited partnership Alfred Veuthey & Cie. Gradually, the wine trade was abandoned in favor of the steel business, which developed alongside the hardware business.
In 1972, the public limited company "Veuthey & Cie S.A." was created and took over the commercial activities of the limited partnership. It was during this period that the company's activities increasingly turned towards the steel trade, i.e., the manufacture of reinforcements and the sale of profiles and sheet metal. At the time, this sector was booming due to major construction projects in Valais, such as dams and tunnels.
Between 1974 and 1988, the company expanded its various sites in Martigny, including the steel warehouse on Rue des Finettes, the sanitary warehouse on Rue du Simplon, and the store located at the time on Place Centrale. Its store in the Ilettes area of Monthey also experienced strong growth.
The early 1980s also saw the arrival of the fourth generation of the family, represented by Christian Veuthey and François Veuthey, Pierre's sons.
In 1989, in order to expand the company's activities to the French-speaking market, a new company name, "Veuthey & Cie Martigny S.A.," was adopted when the subsidiary "Veuthey & Cie Lausanne S.A." was created. Thanks to its experience and professionalism, the latter expanded into the Vaud and Geneva regions around Lake Geneva. In 2000, a processing hall was opened in Nyon, bringing the company closer to its regional customers.
In January 2009, the hardware store and the administrative and sales offices moved from Place Centrale in Martigny to 20 Rue de l'Ancienne-Pointe in the Martigny industrial zone. This consolidation of all activities on one site was made possible by the construction of a new building with our store on the ground floor and offices on the first floor.
Also in January 2009, Veuthey & Cie finalizes its alliance with the Spaeter AG group, which acquires a stake in its share capital. The aim of this alliance is to strengthen supply, particularly in the steel and sanitary sectors. It also ensures the company's long-term viability.
In June 2012, the company opened its Chippis shop for retail sales to sanitary installers, heating engineers, and tinsmiths. A range of hardware accessories completes the offering available to customers. This new branch has enabled the company to develop its business in the center of the canton of Valais and has introduced an internal supply system managed entirely by IT.
Since 1984, the company has been run by the fourth generation, Christian and François Veuthey. David Schmid took over as administrative and financial director when François Veuthey left at the end of 2020. In 2022, the fifth generation of the family will join the company in the form of Thomas Veuthey, marking Veuthey & Cie's commitment to continuity.
