First visit
Appropriate treatment of dental and periodontal diseases is based on correct diagnosis. To this end, during the first visit, in addition to taking a medical and dental historyand identifying the patient's expectations, we perform radiological checks and clinical examinations to detect the presence of caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, and any other conditions such as dental abrasions, gum recession, and joint, functional, and aesthetic problems.
The duration of the visit can vary, depending on the complexity of the case, from half an hour to an hour.
All of this data is then used to plan one or more personalized treatments with a corresponding estimate.
For young patients up to the age of 25 who do not have any particular problems, the first visit, including the dentist's check-up, can becarried out directly by the dental hygienist, who will perform, in addition to the normal prophylaxis session, 4 simple intraoral X-rays (bitewings) to detect any caries.
Dental diagnostics
In order to determine the most appropriate treatment for each individual patient, the following diagnostic procedures are used as necessary:
- intraoral X-rays to detect caries, endodontic and periodontal lesions
- panoramic X-rays: for complex reconstructive therapies, implantology, and maxillary pathologies
- Diagnodent: laser for the evaluation of early caries
- gingival bleeding index: detects the efficiency of oral hygiene performed by the patient
- periodontal findings: detects the presence of periodontal pockets (periodontitis) and/or gum recession
- Microbiological tests
Treatment plan and preliminary therapy
The initial information gathered from clinical and radiological examinations allows us to develop an initial treatment plan aimed primarily at eliminating acute and/or painful oral infections and deep carious dental lesions.
The patient receives an initial treatment plan, accompanied by costs and treatment times.
Causal therapy and home oral hygiene
Before starting any reconstructive therapy, it is necessary to eliminate all dental and periodontal diseases.
Only a healthy mouth can be properly rehabilitated and maintained over time.
Causal therapy aims to:
- motivate the patient and instruct them in proper daily oral hygiene
- remove dental plaque and superficial tartar
- remove subgingival tartar where necessary and smooth root surfaces
- control systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.) and harmful lifestyles (e.g., smoking, alcohol, etc.), disorders, and eating habits (e.g., bulimia, anorexia, excessive sugar consumption, etc.)
Reassessment and treatment plan
Depending on the pathologies present, the treatment plan is structured in several phases and an initial estimate is prepared.
At the end of each phase, a reassessment of the case is carried out to confirm or modify subsequent treatments.
Once the preliminary and causal therapies have been completed, a clinical check-up is carried out to decide on the necessary dental treatments (mainly fillings and root canal treatments).
Next, the need for periodontal treatment (periodontal surgery) and its timing are considered.
At the end of these therapeutic phases, a further reassessment of the case is necessary. At this point, only in the absence of pathologies (caries and/or periodontitis) is it possible to proceed with the final planning of the reconstructions (crowns, bridges, implants, removable prostheses) and determine the actual costs.
Maintenance phase (Recall)
In order to maintain oral health and the results of the treatments carried out over time, regular check-ups are necessary, normally performed by a qualified dental hygienist. The Recall session is essentially a combined causal therapy, individualized according to need. The frequency varies from 3 to 12 months and can last from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the dental and/or periodontal situation.
Regardless of the complexity of the case, it is essential to schedule the Recall immediately after causal therapy so that oral hygiene can be monitored throughout all subsequent therapeutic phases.
