What is acupuncture?
A patient covered in needles—that's the image that comes to mind when we hear the word "acupuncture." There are 365 acupuncture points distributed throughout the body, from the top of the head to the soles of the feet. These points are located on the twelve meridians, which are the channels through which the body's energy, Qi (pronounced "chi"), flows, according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
Circulating vital energy
According to TCM, illness occurs when the body's energy is poorly distributed or blocked. The circulation of Qi is restored by inserting needles into specific points. The location of these points is based on thousands of years of experience and is still valid today.
Treating the cause
Treating the cause of the illness rather than the symptoms is a fundamental principle of TCM. This is why, when treating a heart problem, less attention is paid to the heart than to other parts of the body. For example, if the liver is weakened, it can harm the heart if it retains a lot of anger.
