Spitex – Home Care

The Spitex Association SG|AR|AI is the umbrella organization for approximately 50 local and regional non-profit Spitex organizations operating in the cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, and Appenzell Innerrhoden.

As an employers' and professional association, it:

• Supports and advises its members in the fulfillment of their duties.

• Addresses issues relevant to home care services.

• Maintains contact with authorities, health insurers, and other organizations within the health and social care sectors.

• Acts as an information hub for members and the general public.

What is the purpose of Spitex?

Thanks to Spitex services, those affected can remain in their familiar surroundings at home despite personal limitations, or return home sooner following an inpatient stay. The goal of Spitex is to maintain and promote the client's independence. In doing so, Spitex staff strive to involve the client's private social circle in the help and care process whenever possible.

Who can request Spitex?

Spitex is available to all residents of all ages who require support due to illness, accident, disability, age-related frailty, maternity, or similar circumstances. The deciding factors are necessity and an assessed need. Registration is handled by the local Spitex organization.

How is the scope of care and assistance determined?

Before Spitex begins caring for a person, a specialist assesses the exact need for nursing and/or support services. This needs assessment is required by law and is covered by health insurance. It guarantees that the person concerned receives exactly the right amount of care—neither too little nor too much.
