SEARCHING FOR CLUES
"Life must be lived forwards, but it can only be understood backwards." (Søren Kierkegaard)
Therapy begins with an initial consultation, during which we get to know each other. This initial consultation may extend over two or three sessions. The client can ask questions about my working methods, and I form an initial impression of what has prompted this person to seek therapy. In most cases, it is psychological distress that leads to this step, or perhaps the desire to understand something that is still hidden or buried, to learn something, to uncover a secret or a perceived taboo. For me, this conversation is actually a search for clues. Together with my clients, I want to find the clues that will help us approach the problem and also the clues that can then lead to possible solutions. Sometimes these clues are buried, sometimes they lead far back into the past, even to our ancestors. Sometimes they lead to an environment that has a disturbing effect on people and causes them suffering. Sometimes the search is lengthy, but it usually leads to the goal.
We put experiences and events together like pieces of a puzzle. We ask ourselves questions such as: What was the focus of your life at that time, how did you feel, how did you perceive your environment, what prevented you from doing something you would have liked to do? These and similar questions are discussed. So let's take a look together and we will surely find clues.
Based on this conversation, I can then outline my approach and explain methodological options that can be used effectively (see more under Methods).
