diabetes zürich (formerly the Zurich Diabetes Society) is the official representative body for people with diabetes in the canton of Zurich. Our diabetes counseling service complements medical care in all aspects of diabetes management—we take time for you. Our personalized nutritional counseling does not impose any restrictions, but rather discusses measures that are suitable for everyday life. Thanks to medical foot care, podiatric care for diabetic feet is also provided. In addition, we supply diabetes supplies such as blood glucose meters, blood glucose test strips, and sensors at the price reimbursed by health insurers.

Offers and services

• Diabetes counseling

Diabetes counseling, provided by diabetes specialists—nurses with extensive additional training—offers you expert, personalized support for managing your diabetes in everyday life. You will gain a deeper understanding of your metabolism, the effects of various external influences and medications, etc., enabling you to better control your blood sugar.

• Nutrition counseling

In nutrition counseling, which is carried out by a nutritionist with a university degree, you will receive expert and individual support for optimizing your eating habits and/or losing weight. The decision remains yours as to which measures you would like to implement and where you would prefer not to make any changes.

• Medical foot care

People with diabetes need to take special care of their feet. Nerve damage and circulatory disorders lead to a loss of feeling in the feet and slower healing of wounds. Unfortunately, this means that foot injuries are often not noticed in time. Blisters caused by shoes that are too tight or ill-fitting are also often detected too late, and cutting your own toenails can be dangerous.

• Psychosocial counseling

A key goal for people with diabetes is to maintain a good quality of life and thus their mental well-being. The daily challenge of learning to cope with the disease and implementing therapeutic measures can be tackled with the help of our nutrition and diabetes consultants.

Our services are covered by health insurance (basic insurance).

We require a doctor's prescription for the costs to be covered by health insurance. The current forms can be found on our website: www.diabeteszuerich.ch.

• Delivery of support materials without postage and packaging costs (B Mail only)
• Supply of Abbott FreeStyle Libre sensors at no extra charge
  (CHF 65.30 per sensor)
• Medical foot care paid for by basic insurance (upon medical prescription and after approval of costs by your health insurance company)
• Four issues per year of the member magazine d-journal from diabetesschweiz
• Newsletter with the latest information and expert tips on nutrition and diabetes management
• One diabetic ID card and one blood sugar diary per year are FREE
• Annual check-up of your blood glucose meter is FREE

We also organize...

• a holiday camp for children and young people in collaboration with the Children's Hospital Zurich
• Cooking workshops on balanced, simple meal preparation, as needed
• and put you in touch with experience and self-help groups

Membership fees

CHF 75 for people with earned income
CHF 60 for pensioners receiving AHV or IV and social welfare recipients
CHF 50 for students, apprentices, pupils, and young people up to the age of 18 without earned income
