How does fiber optic technology work?

With conventional copper technology, data is transmitted via electrical impulses. In contrast, fiber optic technology transmits optical signals at the speed of light using extremely narrow fiber optic cables (also known as optical waveguides). This enables a much higher maximum bandwidth. This means that more information can be transmitted per unit of time and symmetrical transmission is also possible (i.e., the speed in megabits per second is the same for uploads as for downloads).

Fiber optic cables can be laid over several hundred kilometers without the need for intermediate amplifiers. In addition, signals transmitted via fiber optic cables are insensitive to electrical and magnetic interference fields and offer a relatively high level of security against eavesdropping.
