Its director, professor Marc de Smet obtained his medical degree in Canada. He is board certified in Canada, the United States, and Europe. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, Royal College of Ophthalmologists of the UK, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has an international reputation in the medical and surgical treatments of retinal diseases and uveitis. He has received several international awards for his contributions and innovations and was elected to the Retinal Hall of Fame in 2022.
