October 21, 2018 | Eric RouxThe Brèche golf course in Granges currently comprises 18 holes spread over an area of 55 hectares. The course is bordered to the north by the Rhône riverbank, to the east by the village of Granges, to the south by the Sion–Grône cantonal road, and to the west by the Pouta-Fontana nature reserve.
The architects of the course were Maurice Bembridge and Michel Zufferey for the first nine holes and Alain Dehaye and Jean-Claude Renggli for the extension. During the two stages of construction, these architects worked in collaboration with the State Services and environmental associations to build a course that respects the environment (flora and fauna) and the various associations that claimed the right to frequent the banks of the Brèche and Corne lakes (fishermen, friends of the gouille, divers, walkers).
Each hole on the course offers something special, whether it be views of the Alps and surrounding resorts, a variety of tree and flower species, or the many species of fish, land animals, and birds.
Viewpoints
Along the fairways, you can admire the foothills of Anniviers and Montana, the resorts of Nendaz, Vercorin and Nax, and some of the magnificent peaks of the Valais, such as Haut de Cry, La Dent de Nendaz, Mont Noble, Bella Tola, Crêt-du-Midi, Bietschorn, Torrenthorn, and Illhorn.
Flora
Throughout the course, golfers and walkers who take the specially designed paths can admire countless species of plants and trees, such as poplars, alders, dogwoods, clematis, orchids, cherry trees, white-footed willows, birches, viburnums, weeping willows, Scots pines, oaks, and many others. During the construction of these two nine-hole courses, no fewer than 8,000 trees and shrubs of all species recognized by environmentalists were planted to complement the existing forests.
Fish fauna
Along the Réchy and Dérochia rivers, canals, ponds, and the Brèche and Corne lakes, you can see a multitude of fish and amphibians such as trout, pike, tench, carp, frogs, toads, etc.
Terrestrial fauna
Many animals live on and around the golf course and can be seen depending on the season and time of day, including hares, beavers, squirrels, foxes, deer, etc.
Winged fauna
In the course area, attentive golfers and walkers can hear and observe a large number of bird species: chickadees, finches, woodpeckers, gray herons, warblers, wagtails, swans, ducks, moorhens, etc., and even bats at dusk.
