Patients who visit an osteopathic practice may present with medical conditions, osteopathic dysfunctions, and energy dysfunctions.

Only osteopathic and energy dysfunctions are treated with complementary therapies.
By questioning and examining the patient, the osteopath will exclude from their treatment any medical conditions that need to be treated by a doctor. They will look for signs and symptoms of osteopathic dysfunctions.

However, during the initial examination or during osteopathic treatment, it may become apparent that the patient has signs and symptoms of associated energy dysfunctions.
