The balata tree is a slow-growing, evergreen deciduous tree. It has greenish-yellow to white flowers. Berries are formed with a diameter of around 2.5 cm. The berries usually contain only one black seed surrounded by a sweet pulp that is edible.

This tree produces the wood known as massaranduba, also called balata rouge, beef wood, or horse meat wood, a tropical hardwood species similar to bankirai. Originating from Peru, the trade name is Quinilla.

The color of the wood is red to reddish brown and is very dark. The weight is 1100-1300 kg/cbm. It is used for carpentry, joinery work, railroad sleepers, hydraulic engineering, bridge building, shipbuilding, furniture, veneer, musical instruments, tools and sports equipment.
