The mecca of Vaud fondue!
The café-restaurant at the Tour de Gourze naturally offers cheese specialties, but also cold meat platters and generous desserts, such as meringues with double Gruyère cream and homemade fruit cakes on Sundays.
In winter, you can enjoy a delicious sausage with cabbage and rösti.
The restaurant was built in 1900 by the Bujard family, farmers and winegrowers in Riex. They found a way to sell their wine through this café.
In 1922, they sold their restaurant to Mr. and Mrs. Angèle and Daniel Banderet. Mr. and Mrs. Banderet had visited several establishments but chose this one because the "roof was good." They moved in in July 1922. At that time, there was no water, electricity, or road. Electricity was installed in 1923 and the telephone in 1931. Water was brought in in 1939 and the road was built in 1971.
Following a storm in June 1942, a fire destroyed the café and practically nothing could be saved. Everything had to be rebuilt, even more beautiful than before! The stone walls are therefore original, and it was at this point that the café became a chalet. A member of the Swiss Alpine Club, Diablerets section, donated a table following the fire. This table can still be seen in the restaurant, so keep an eye out for it on your next visit. Despite the death of her husband, Mrs. Angèle Banderet continued to run the restaurant with the help of her daughter until 1980.
Although she registered her business in 1968, it was not until 1980 that Mrs. Angèle Cossy-Banderet took over the business following the death of her mother. She undertook numerous renovations to improve the comfort of the café. She ran the restaurant until 2003, when she handed it over to her granddaughter, Christine Martin-Cossy. The restaurant has therefore been in the family for many years and, for many people in the Vaud region, is synonymous with memories such as school trips, meals with friends or family, romantic dates, etc.
